What about the children?

mother and child
  • These children face a dual threat: witnessing the trauma, and becoming victims themselves.
  • They live with unnaturally high levels of anxiety, and often experience difficulties in shcool.
  • They may suffer post traumatic stress disorder-similar to war vererans-even after a single incident.
  • They are more likely to experience truancy, temper tantrums, juvenile delinquency, theft, insomnia, depression, physical health problems, substance abuse, teenage prostitution, and violence towards peers.
  • They are much more likely to perpetuate the roles of abuser or victim when they become adults.
